A Guide to Understanding Ayurvedic Medicine

Comparison To Traditional Medicine

Ayurvedic and mainstream medicine are different in many ways. Each medical system defines the term “disease” differently. In traditional medicine, disease is defined as any disturbance or deviation of the normal structure or function of any part of the body. Ayurvedic doctors believe that disease is caused by an imbalance of the three doshas. Traditional medicine focuses on specific body systems to treat and cause disease. Ayurvedic medical theory is based on the idea that stress and poor digestion are the root causes of all disease. Ayurvedic treatment is the same for all illnesses and involves repairing digestive function, balancing doshas and removing stress. The traditional medicine combines pharmaceutical treatments with lifestyle and diet changes, with complementary treatment methods. Ayurvedic medicines use diet and lifestyle changes and then move on to herbs and panchakarma if those changes do not work.
