Explore the World’s Most Forbidden Places

Poveglia Island, Italy

Poveglia Island is located in the Venetian Lagoon and has been called one of the most haunted locations on earth. Poveglia Island has a dark, gruesome past. It was a quarantine center during the bubonic epidemic in the 18th Century and then a mental hospital in the 20th Century.

It is believed that the brutal treatment of sick and mentally ill people has left a residue on the island. Over the years, many sightings of spirits and other supernatural phenomena were reported. The Italian government, despite the island’s fame, has prohibited visitors from entering its shores. Only a small number of authorized personnel are allowed to enter. Poveglia Island is a fascinating place, but also a terrifying one. The abandoned chapel and decaying ruins at the asylum add to its eerie atmosphere.
