Lascaux Caves, France

The Lascaux Caves are a treasure trove of prehistoric art hidden deep within a limestone hill of the Dordogne area of France. These caves are home to some of the best preserved and most impressive Paleolithic paintings from around the globe, which date back more than 17,000 years. The detailed and vivid paintings of animals and humans as well as abstract symbols give a glimpse of the ancient beliefs and lives of our ancestors. They have inspired many artists and scholars throughout the years.

The Lascaux caves are off-limits for the public despite their importance. Only a few selected researchers and conservationists have access to the site. In 1963, the caves were closed due to damage caused by humans. A replica cave was built nearby so that visitors could enjoy the art without disturbing its fragile environment. The Lascaux Caves are a testament to human ingenuity and beauty, as well as a reminder that our cultural heritage is fragile.
