U.N. Buffer Zone, Cyprus

A demilitarized area in the divided island Cyprus serves as a buffer zone between the Turkish-controlled northern and the Greek controlled southern parts – this is the United Nations Buffer Zone. The United Nations peacekeepers patrol this strip of land known as the Green Line. It has existed since the 1970s after the Turkish invasion. The zone is still a forbidden and restricted area, despite the relative peace. Only authorized personnel can enter the zone, and only under certain circumstances.

This zone contains abandoned homes, streets that are empty, and other remnants from the conflict. It provides a harrowing look at the lasting effects of war. The Buffer Zone is a reminder that peace can be fragile and international cooperation is essential to resolving conflict. It also serves as a symbol for the fragility and importance of peace.
