Foods to Avoid on the Whole30 Diet

Grains

The Whole30 diet excludes all grains including oats and corn. It also eliminates rice, wheat, barley, and rye. Quinoa and buckwheat are also eliminated. The Whole30 program does not allow patients to consume grains containing cornstarch, wheatgerm, or any other additives derived from grains. These additives are commonly found in processed food. Some people report feeling less bloated, sluggish and improved mood when grains are removed.

Eliminating these products can help Whole30 participants lose weight. Many foods can contain grains. Patients should be aware of this and read labels carefully to ensure they are not eating grains. It is better to base meals on vegetables than grains. A baked potato, for example, is a great substitute for rice. Patients who notice symptoms they believe could be related to grain sensitivity should consult their doctor regarding celiac. It is important to do this if symptoms return when grains are introduced after the Whole30 program.

Legumes

Whole30 followers are advised to avoid most legumes including peanuts, peanut butter and peanut oil. The Whole30 program also prohibits tofu, miso and soy protein. These legumes can cause lecithin syndrome and increase inflammation. Protease inhibitors found in legumes can cause allergic reactions. Protease inhibitors may also cause leaky gut syndrome and chronic inflammation in some individuals. Natural phytates can be found in legumes and may reduce mineral absorption.

Phytoestrogens are found in some legumes. They could lead to an imbalance in hormones due to the production of too much estrogen. Some patients have found that legumes can cause weight to be lost to slow down. The Whole30 program does not allow legumes for this reason. The only legumes currently allowed in the Whole30 diet is green beans and peas. Split peas and yellow peas as well as green peas (snow peas), sugar snap peas and green peas can all be consumed. Some people may find it difficult to eliminate legumes. Eliminating legumes could be easier if you cook at home.
