Guide to High-Fiber foods and Recipes for Irritable Bowel Syndrome

Oatmeal

Breakfast oatmeal is a very popular choice. Oatmeal is a great addition to the diet of irritable-bowel-syndrome patients, as it’s high in fiber. A low-FODMAP diet is also possible with oats. Some varieties may trigger symptoms of IBS. It is usually due to the artificial flavors or milk in packaged oatmeal. Patients must therefore carefully read the label to determine the exact ingredients. You can make your own oatmeal at home.

Eating too much oats may also cause symptoms. Portion control is important when incorporating oatmeal into an IBS diet. It is important to cook the oats in order to remove some resistant starch. Resistant starch, a fiber, can cause symptoms of irritable-bowel syndrome. One cup of rolled oatmeal, two cups unsweetened almondmilk, one mashed banana and a half-teaspoon of vanilla extract can be combined to make wholesome homemade oatmeal. This mixture should be heated in a pot, until the oats are able to absorb the milk.
