How to prevent flare-ups of Crohn’s disease with diet

Crohn’s is an inflammatory disease of the bowel. The disease causes an excessive amount of inflammation in the digestive tract. The condition can cause severe flare-ups. Patients may also suffer from potentially life-threatening complications. Certain foods can trigger flare-ups, and an unhealthy diet can exacerbate existing symptoms.

Anti-inflammatory medications are commonly prescribed to treat Crohn’s Disease. Corticosteroids are the most common treatment for Crohn’s. Other medications may be needed to treat the condition. Vitamin A injections are often given to patients with Crohn’s because they are at high risk for deficiency. Crohn’s may be treated with surgery. There are natural remedies to treat Crohn’s. Patients should create a Crohn’s disease diet in order to avoid flare-ups.

Avoid Whole Wheat

Experts advise Crohn’s patients to avoid whole wheat bread, and other products made from whole wheat. Whole grains should be part of any healthy diet because of their fiber content. Fiber helps to regulate digestion. Foods high in fiber can be problematic for Crohn’s patients. Whole wheat is high in fiber that passes through the digestive tract intact, rather than being degraded. This can cause diarrhea and abdominal discomfort, especially in Crohn’s patients.

Gluten sensitivity may also contribute to this reaction. Avoid eating whole wheat bread, pasta and barley-based products. Other grains include rice and rice-based pastas, gluten-free wheat bread, oatmeal, potatoes and cornmeal.
