Japanese inventions that changed the way we live and travel

31. Umbrellas with Moisture-Activated Color-Changing Prints

What is it: An umbrella that changes colour when it rains
Invented: 2016
Average price:$20.51*

RainStoppers created this umbrella that changes color when it rains. It is part of a series of umbrella inventions from Japan in the last year. Prints vary depending on what you purchase, but the most popular is the butterfly design which costs $20.51.

RainStoppers has created almost every type of umbrella you can imagine. The moisture-activated umbrella is made from pongee and comes with a fiberglass frame, an auto-opening button and a wooden handle. According to Statistadesign was the fourth most important factor when Japanese buyers bought an umbrella, behind price, size and weight.

The color-changing umbrellas may be more for aesthetic purposes than practical ones, but they do have an interesting side effect. They will stay colored when wet, so you can see the status of the umbrella when choosing the one to use in the morning.
