Japanese inventions that changed the way we live and travel

4. Umbrella Locks

What is it? It works like a bicycle lock but for an umbrella
Invented: 2018
Average price:$0*

This one seems to be quite useful. At some point, we’ve all lost or stolen umbrellas (or thought that someone had taken them). Japanese stores and malls have developed a locking mechanism that is similar to a bicycle lock but for umbrellas. When you enter the store, you lock your umbrella.

When you leave, take it along with you. Bonus: You don’t need to carry an umbrella around with you while you are in the store. Both you and the owners will be thankful for this. The invention is also free.

This is the type of improvement we would love to see in America, considering it has become a service provided by all public authorities throughout Japan. Particularly in the areas of the country that are perpetually wet (looking at you, Seattle).
