Japanese inventions that changed the way we live and travel

62. Onion protection glasses

What is it: Glasses that have fans attached for blowing away onion fumes
Invented: 2016
Average price: Unlisted

The Onion Protection Glasses were invented by Chindogu Master Kenji Kawakami. They are “useless” according to Kawakami. These glasses come with fans to blow off the fumes of onions. Sharper Image, a company in the United States, may have an alternative invention.

These glasses are not only functional, but also funny. Onions make your eyes water because they produce syn-propanethial-S-oxide, which is a chemical irritant. The irritation stimulates the tear glands and makes chopping onions unpleasant. The Onion Protection Glasses have fans that prevent S-oxide reaching your eyes.
