Pomegranate Health Benefits

Can Help Fight Infections

The pomegranate can be used to fight infection. Researchers noted that it was particularly effective at fighting fungal and bacteria infections. For example, a 2009 study of pomegranate rind extract found it was moderately effective in inhibiting the growth of methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) and methicillin-sensitive Staphylococcus aureus (MSSA). In 2010, a study concluded that dried and powdered peel of pomegranates was effective at inhibiting Candida albicans, the fungus responsible for yeast infections. Further research indicates that pomegranates may help to protect against oral infections like periodontitis and gingivitis. Pomegranates may also help improve the health of your immune system. This could make it easier to combat the common cold or other minor illnesses. Researchers conducted a clinical study in 2012 to investigate the anti-infection properties of pomegranate on approximately 100 patients who were undergoing regular dialysis. Over a period of one year, the patients consumed pomegranate three times a week. Patients who consumed pomegranate-juice had less inflammation and were hospitalized for infection.
