To succeed in the modern workplace, every professional needs to have 12 skills.

Intuition

Data doesn’t tell the whole story in the workplace of today. In order to fill in the gaps created by inaccurate or incomplete data, professionals need to rely on their intuition.

The intuition that is commonly referred to as a “gut feel” is actually not an emotion. It is a confidence that a person gains over time through knowledge, experience and lessons learned.

By listening to experts, reading constantly, and focusing on the world around them, professionals can develop their intuition. To develop your business intuition, take advantage of the opportunities to be involved in major projects and initiatives.

Project Management

Modern workplaces do not require repetitive, daily work. Most important projects involve co-workers in multiple departments.

Projects may include new product launches, marketing initiatives or software deployment.

Successful professionals can manage products of this type. These include team leadership skills, budgeting and communication skills, as well as time management and budgeting.

Focus

Modern workplaces are distracting. Meetings, emails and the latest quarterly report are all distracting. Other distractions include social media, the latest pandemic information, and for remote workers, the distractions at home.

Professionals that can concentrate on a specific task for a sustained period of time are more productive and perform better. People who are unable to focus on a task for a sustained period of time tend to be less creative and take poor decisions.

Focus is a skill that takes time to develop. Create a working environment that encourages you to concentrate. When you are in a slump, avoid looking at your phone and surfing the internet. Avoid checking your email and schedule short breaks when you are working on a particular task.

Software comprehension

Modern workplaces are run by software. Project management software. Content management. Customer management. Business intelligence. Management of Human Resources. Marketing management Asset management. Risk management. Accounting. Governance. Software will be involved in most of your daily tasks.

Many companies require their employees to be able to operate a wide range of software. The more you know, the more efficient and productive you will be in your work.

It’s possible that you don’t know every brand and type of software a company uses. The more you use and learn different software applications, you will be able to easily pick up new ones.
