Japanese inventions that changed the way we live and travel

24. Square Watermelon

What is it: It’s a watermelon that has been shaped into a cube.
Invented: 2009
Average price:$50 to $100*

Only in Japan can you find square watermelons. Shikaku Suika is the name given to the square watermelon that is grown in a cube-shaped shape with tempered glass. It is only ornamental. Some can cost as much as $100, while others are priced at $50. Melons are part the Japanese gourmet fruit trend.

These shikaku Suika unfortunately are not edible. These em>shikaku suika/em> are harvested before they are ripe. This means they’re hard, green and tasteless. These square watermelons, though expensive, are cheaper than the Yubari Cantaloupe which costs $160. One watermelon was sold at auction for $23,500.

The fruit, which is a unique looking fruit, has become an icon of Japanese culture. It can be seen in anime films, video games and even classic Japanese cinema.
