Treatment for Bulging Eyes

Sometimes, when the eyes bulge out of their normal position, it is a sign that a serious condition needs to be treated. Treatment will vary depending on the cause of the bulging. Exophthalmos is the most common medical term for bulging eye . The eyes of some people naturally protrude without a underlying condition.

If the white of the iris is visible without lifting the eyelid, then the eyes protrude. It is an emergency if only one eye bulges suddenly. You should seek immediate medical attention. Bulging eyes can be treated in a variety of ways. Some treatment options will target the eye itself, while others may focus on treating the underlying cause.

Corticosteroids Or Antibiotics

A doctor will prescribe either corticosteroids, or antibiotics depending on the cause. Some patients may benefit from a mixture of both. Antibiotics can be used to fight bacterial infections. Infections of the tissues behind or inside the eye can cause bulging eyes. Some eye infections will go away on their own. Others require antibiotics. Even if they feel better, patients should complete the full course of anti-biotics.

If patients only complete part of the course, the infection may come back and become antibiotic-resistant. Corticosteroids can be prescribed to treat inflammation that is associated with eye bulging. Also, they reduce the activity of the immune system in the body. Some are topically applied, while others can be taken orally or via intravenously. Corticosteroids, an artificial version of cortisol (one of the main hormones released by the adrenal glands), are a form of cortisol.
